I woke up and I have a sore throat, runny nose and chest congestion. Does anybody have any ideas that might make me feel better for tomorrow?

Yes! I have just the thing for you!

Take water and heat it up for tea (1 cup is the serving size for the drink thought). Disolve 2 and a half tablespoons of honey in the water. Soak a lemon slice in the water for 5 minutes. Drink it in the morning, before every meal, and when you start feeling awful again.

This cleanses out your system, soothes a sore throat, an upset stomach, and in 1 week, you will see your skin be all glowy!

For the runny nose, steam your face whenever you start feeling stuffy, the key is TO NOT LET THE COLD GET TO YOU!! This is the best cure, I swear! Don't sit around aalll day long, your nose will stuff up even more and it won't help one bit! Instead, bundle up and go out for a brisk walk, this increases blood circulation, which helps your nose clear out and yoru chest congestion. Nasal sprays sometimes trickle to the back of your throat and don't help a sore throat.

I have also noticed that if my nose begins to get stuffy, get up AS FAST AS YOU CAN and run around the whole house, I swear it works. Your nose clears out, you blow your nose, and relief for an hour!

Gargle warm salt water every few hours. Drink 8 glasses of water a day, and even better would be 10 glasses a day.

I know this sounds crazy, but eat a lemon! Not all at once (Yeah...made that mistake once, my stomach was an acid bomb), but eat a slice at a time. This really helps your immune system!

Be sure to drink chicken soup, although scientists don't know HOW it helps, it certainly does!

Get 10+ hours of sleep every night. Plus sleep on 2 elevated pillows, it will drain your nose and allow you to breath.

Good luck and a happy New Year!

All the advice you've gotten about a sheet, tylenol, wash cloths etc is perfect. They're focused on the fever and the vomiting. The part that the YA doctors (Yes that's a pinch of sarcasm) are ignoring is the breathing hard and coughing you're describing. It's a bit late now, I'm sure this has resolved itself but for future readers, here are some questions you need to answer regarding his breathing.. Are there areas or spaces in the ribs that sink in as the he inhales or are his nostrils flaring? Is his breathing rapid and shallow? These are all signs of an asthma attack. You don't mess with an acute asthma flare up. Don't wait until you see signs of oxygen deprivation. If you answer yes to these questions and you can't reach your step dad, call his doctor or if you can't reach one, if you drive, drive to the ER. Call another relative or trusted neighbor. I hope your brother is feeling better.

Me too :( Crappy. I woke up and my throat is on fire, and I am coughing like I have been sick for a week with the flu. This started yesterday so I started drinking vitamin C drinks, eating vitamins and soup. Today I thought for sure I would wake up worse but suprisingly I feel like I am getting over an old cold. very weird huh? I guess just do the usual, rest up, drink lots of fluids, and keep a full belly.

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).

Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.

Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.

There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.

The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Drink orange juice (full of vitamin c which boosts you immune system). Drink 2-3 cups of that. There is a cough drop called Cold Eze (not sure of spelling). If you take that at the first sign of a cold it should really reduce the duration of the cold but I found that it made the cold not be nearly so bad too. Good Luck!
