I have been both a Lexus and Acura mechanic, and I agree with the Toyota/Honda formula. As someone mentioned before that a Chevy will last a long time with proper maintenance is true to some degree, but with the same maintence, I think a Toyota/Honda will last even longer. While personally, I believe the American automakers are becoming better, your best bet is with an import.

A few things to consider on the Honda/Toyota end: The Toyota Highlander drivetrain is the same as a Lexus RX330/350, which also the same as the V6 Camry, that includes the hybrid models.
I would make this general comparison. Lexus is to Mercedes as Honda is to BMW. The Lexus/Merc product line focuses more on luxury, comfort, and techno bells and whistles, whereas the Honda/BMW is more power and performance. I do not recommend Porsche. We have a German brand dealer next door and their tech CONSTANTLY complain about working on those cars and what a nightmare they are just to maintain.

It really depends. This question is too vague to answer with one choice. The Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover are two of the most luxurious on the market, both exude class and both retain full off-road credentials. Tough acts to follow.

BMW and Infiniti SUV's have excellent luxury appointments as well, but sacrifice off-road ability for ride quality and performance.

Mercedes falls somewhere in between.

Like I said, just too many variables. If I had to boil it down to one, I'd say at the high end the Porsche Cayenne is the closest to doing everything right. It has sportscar like performance and handling, excellent off-road ability, a very classy image and great luxury interior and arguably better reliability than Range Rover.

At the lower-end price scale, I would choose the Toyota Highlander Hybrid. You get plenty of power, enough luxury to satisify most people, plus fantastic fuel economy, a lower entry price and reliability that is far better than any of the other brand except Honda which is equal.

Somewhere in-between would be the Lexus RX400h hybrid SUV, if you want a bit more luxury, but still like the idea of higher fuel economy and stellar reliability.

That's stupid. SUV's already have tax levies in some areas, if you buy a truely big gas guzzler, you already pay more fuel tax, you pay more period. If someone wants a SUV, they pay more and buy it, tacking on more money won't curb that, it will only penalize those that want a choice. I have a bad knee, and can't sit all cramped up in a little car, why should I be penalized to be comfortable, and to be safe on the road, and have 4 wheel drive in the snow? Go hug your tree a little tighter. Research it, there are proven statistical facts that show a new Chev trailblazer can drive from coast to coast and cause fewer emissions than painting a room with just 1 gallon of latex paint! SUV's are not the problem, people that are ignorant of facts are a problem. You're probably all content to go jump in your little 1980's toyota or honda and be all warm and fuzzy about thinking it's so good for the environment, while a brand new suv would have fewer emmissions

I have owned a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with 4.9 liter 6 cylinder engine for the past 5+ years. I have no complaints and have had nothing but good luck. The Nissan XTerras and Toyota 4 Runners are also very good.

SUV only? or are you planning on towing at any time?
Towing...Go Chevy. All comparisons I've done, Chevy has more HP for the size.
Reliability...Anything will last if you keep up with the maintenance.
Gas mileage? If this is something that bothers you...You are not a the right person to be looking for an SUV, go find a minivan.

don't get a Land Rover. Of the listed, I would get Toyota, personally, I choose the Chevrolet Tahoe.
