Hakman is generally considered to have gone through several different stages of style- with the most dramatic change happening after his release from a German POW camp at the end of WWII. To generalize, I would say that he drifted from Impressionist to Impressionistic Realism, with most of the changes in his style having to do with the use of color and brush stroke.
