You will both need a passport. in order to get a passport for a child, both parents must be present and sign the application. if only one parent is going or if you are divorced, you MUST have a notarized letter from the other parent giving permission for you to take the child out of the country. Cannot get a passport without it. Take the letter with you when you travel too as some countries want to see it. You must also have a visa for each of you from the country you are going to. You can go to the web site listed below. it is the official state department site and gives complete instructions aon getting passports and regulations for children. Then check with embassy or consulate of country you are going to for visa information. You will also need certified birth certificates and copy of divorce decree if applicable. I just did all this last year.

In the event that you are divorced, you have to have your sons father sign off on the passport. US law requires both parents concent to taking a child out of the country.

Also, someone told me that laws regarding the passport were changing as of 1.1.07....you might want to check with the website for specific information. I know you can also download the forms from there.....just "google" passport and the website should come up.

It may depend on his age. Typically its a birth certificate that is necessary to get a passport.

well 1st of all you need a passport unless you dont want your son to have his U.S. citizenship anymore, there is more info, and usually more info will come after you have a passport, so i hope this helps.

The US is a free country you dont need papers to leave. But you have to check with the country you are going to.
