What they're traditionally made from (this has been tinkered with in modern times) or flavoured with.
Originally:
Rum made from fermented sugar. Some are aged in casks to develop the darker varieties. Rum is a little sweeter than the other three.
Vodka is essentially water and grain alcohol (ethanol). Though traditionally it was made with potatoes, it can be made with almost anything that will ferment. Vodka is theoretically flavourless and odorless.
Gin is very close to vodka, essentially grain alcohol flavoured with juniper berries and/or other botanicals and then redistilled.
Rum, Vodka and Gin are all distilled liquors, i.e. the alcohol part has been extracted from some other mixture.)
Beer was made from barley malt (a syrup made from a grain,) flavoured with hops (a flower/herb) and fermented in it's container with yeast. Though many brewers now use other grains including corn. Beer comes in many flavour varieties from sweet to bitter and is bubbly (produced by the yeast).

Well, there are different ways of producing alcohol.
There's a class of alcohol known as "distilled spirits". These include gin, vodka, whiskey, etc. They vary based on ingredients, aging, techniquest, and so forth.
Then there are fermented beverages, which is another way of producing alcohol from the sugars in a beverage. Beer is a fermented beverage.
As an example, consider apple cider. Regular apple cider is taken from the earlier crop of apples, and isn't filtered, so it's not like apple juice. It's preferably not pasteurized. Leave it in your cellar / basement for a few months, and fermentation occurs from the natural yeast and sugars, and it produces alcohol, and you end up with "hard" cider - called hard because it has an edge to it, and it can get you drunk.
You could even ferment regular fruits - like an orange - as long as it has sugars and you give it enough time.
The distilled spirits are a different story. Some need aging in a wood barrel to make them tolerable (otherwise they're an awful flavor and just horrible). The different styles and ingredients are what give you the difference between whiskey and vodka and rum and gin. For instance, gin is a berry-based drink.

They are all different liquors that have an alcohol content. Each liquor you listed has a unique and interesting history.
Each one is made from different grains and fermentation processes. Each has a different age or time that it takes to form the beverage.
Rum, Gin and Vodka are distilled alcoholic beverages. They are considered hard liquor beacuse of the percentage of alcohol.
Beer is fermented. It has a lower alcoholic content -3% 5%.
If you are really interested about the history of each and how it is made try using google for each one to look up the information.

How it 's made is the first thing I'd say. Rum is made from sugar cane, gin from wheat flavored with the Juniper Berry, Vodka can be made from damn near anything but is usually made from wheat and beer is a whole lot of things mashed into one big pile of stuff, fermented, cooked and bottled.
How it's used is a whole nother story. Put another buck in the tip jar and I'll tell you about it.

What makes them different is a few things. Beer is made from some sort of grain (depends on the beer) and hopps. It is also carbonated like soda. "Hard" liquor is also made form different things. Rum for example is made during the process of making sugar. Gin I believe is made from juniper berries or with them in the mix. They are all made differently, distilled differently, and aged differently.

Beer is fermented and somewhat bread-like in taste. Liquors are distilled (all water is removed).
Rum is slightly sugary.
Gin has the essence of juniper and pine.
Vodka is nearly tasteless. Top brands may be nearly sweet.
