Here is what worked well for me:

1. Get the book "Spanish Made Simple" by Eugene Jackson and Antonio Rubio. Start at the beginning and go to the end. Work all of the exercises on paper, in a notebook.
2. Get the CD "Learn In Your Car - Spanish", published by Penton Overseas
3. Listen to Spanish radio stations. (if available in your area)
4. Eat in Mexican restaurants a lot, and talk to the waiters.
5. After you have studied #1 and #2 for a while, do this: Subscribe to satellite TV through Dish Network. Get the Latino Max package. Watch it until you understand what they are saying. I like the music videos on the HTV channel for this purpose.

I did all of the above, and I learned a lot of Spanish.

I would recommend Guatemala. Of course it depend a bit on what kind of Spanish you want to learn. If, for some odd reason, you *need* to learn the Spanish spoken in Spain, then you should obviously go there.

But if you just want to learn any Spanish, then Guatemala would be my first choice. The Guatemalans speak rather slowly and clearly which is great when you are a beginner. On the other hand you will struggle if you fly straight from Guatemala City to, say Malaga, where people speak fast and with a vicious accent.

In Guatemala, Antigua or Quetzaltenango (aka "Xela") are in my opinion the best cities to learn Spanish. Both have a lot of language schools but Xela has less foreigners, so you get to speak Spanish more frequently than in Antigua.

Antigua has over 100 schools where you can study Spanish. Some are better, some are worse, but the basic deal you get is almost the same everywhere.

For approx. 150 USD a week (give or take a bit) you get:
- Accommodation with a host family for one week
- Three meals a day for six days (you have to find your own food on Sundays)
- 5 hours of Spanish lessons a day (Mon-Fri).
- All lessons are 1:1 i.e. just you and your teacher.

Since the lessons are 1:1 you learn very quickly, at your own pace and you can steer the course towards the subjects that are important to you.

I speak four languages and I would say that learning Spanish in Guatemala was by far the most efficient way I ever learned a language.

Hope this helped.

The fastest would be in a spanish speaking community or country. If you can do that..Im telling you, watch a lot of spanish soaps and other tv programs. And you cant go anywhere without meeting someone who speaks spanish so just go back and forth askign questions. Say "Como es dice (english word) in ingles?" and thats a good way to show someone your interesting in learning the language. Just have fun! Good luck!
