To record from a TV, your TV has to have audio video OUTPUTS. Most TV's these days have inputs but many do not have outputs. All VCR's have audio video outputs so you can use your VCR as a TV tuner and hook up your portable DVR to it. Also if you have a satellite or digital cable box, you just hook up your portable DVR directly to it. If you want to watch it on your TV at the same time, you'll either need a/v Y jacks so you can hook them both up or the TV can just use the coaxial connection albeit at a worse quality . I'd prefer the first option as you could leave the cords there just plugging it into your AV500 as you need it and not having to disconnect everything just to record a show when you need to.
