its a metaphor for a battle between love and hate. I beleive love lands the knockout blow in the end.

Like spiderwebs and swallows, LOVE HATE on the knuckles is a prison tattoo. I think the tradition is you get a different one depending on how long you've been inside, but quite a few non ex-cons get prison style tattoos now.

Love on the right hand (Latin = Dexter) (like in Dexterous!)
Hate on the left hand (Latin - Sinister) ..................
I suppose it is there so the person can tell his or her left hand from the right!
