Now, obviosuly this may not work for everyone. But this has worked for my son, and I wanted to share this with all of you.

My son is is eight months old. He has been using a pacifer since he was born. He had gotten horrible the past couple of months. Not only could he not sleep without his pacifer he spent all day sucking on it too. One day we decided to just take it away. Yeah, that didn't work. He just screamed and screamed until we gave it back, and we waited all day to give it back. So.. We went and bought him some new ones because his old one needed replaced Up to this point we had always given him really soft ones. But he now has all four of his front eeth and had been putting holes in his pacifers, which is why we had tried to take it away. So we bought him a harder one, hoping he wouldn't break that. Well, when we gave it to him he freaked out because he couldn't bite it like his old one. After he a few days he simply stopped trying to bite it.

And now, about a week later, he has practically forgotten about his pacifer. He never wants it anymore. And he doesn't ever cry for it.

I did a similar thing with my daughter, who was never happy unless she had at least 3 pacifiers with her at a time... (one for each hand, one for her mouth!!) When she got to the point that they were less of a "security blanket" but had become just a habit she didn't feel like stopping, I waited until they got especially grungy, then had her help me pick out the new replacements. I told her she couldn't put them in her mouth until I'd washed them. Then, while washing them, I cut the tip off.. so no air stayed inside... which made it no fun to suck on. They lasted a couple days... and then she was done. She wasn't HAPPY about it, but she was fine.

We "accidentally" left our son's behind when we were away for a weekend. We said we would collect it the next time. No problems.
