If you are having a bath or a shower,to stop the cast getting wet ,a plastic bag as others have mentioned.
If you are having a bath keep your leg propped above the water line ,use less water is properly a good idea. There is no way you want to put that cast into a bath of water as any waterproofing wont be enough,it will get wet.
I've worked on orthopaedic wards and find the big problem people have is that water gets down inside the cast.
The best way to avoid that is to wrap plastic kitchen wrap around the top .Make sure it covers about 3or 4 inches both ways, below the cast line and the top of the bag and over the knee so no water can run in.
You can tape the bag on firmly ,but not tight, then put the wrap over it. Can I suggest using two bags!Often there are tiny holes or cracks in the plastic that you don't notice.
About the itch. Its an annoying part of having a cast on.Except for using a long artists brush, flat top or a back scratcher (if it will fit)a knitting needle or a piece of bamboo wood plastic or cane.Anything you can get down between the cast and your leg.Other than that, there is not a lot you can do,unfortunately.
The plaster is very drying on the skin and your leg will need some re-hydration with a moisturising cream when it comes off. That is why it itches.Antihistamines etc will not help.

My daughter was in the same situation. We put a long trash bag on it with a rubber band around the top. Depending on how much you weigh and small rubber band might not do it, you will have to buy one of those extra large rubber bands. Also, you would have to put like a towel or something on the shower floor because the bag will be slippery. As far as the itch, she use to use a plastic hanger to get in the cast to relieve the itch a little bit. Anything long and smooth that won't cut your skin or get stuck in the cast.
This went one for months. Good luck.

I used to get into the bath tub and hang my bad leg over the edge so it wouldn't get wet. You could try the shower with a garbage bag over your cast, but I would be afraid of getting the cast wet. I don't know what to tell you about the itch. Don't scratch inside the cast, as that could cause infection. Try benedryl that you can purchase at the pharmacy. That might help. Good luck.

For the itch, put some tape over the end of a metal clothes hanger. That way, you won't tear the skin. The skinny metal ones are the only kind small enough to fit inside the cast.
