It depends on the hotel, what their fees are and if they charge a minimum. Our hotel charged a minimum of $7500, which we had to meet with food, decor, and drinks. If we went over - we had to pay the difference. Everything added up pretty quickly and we did have an overage. We ended up having about 150 guests, each plate was $50, white tablecloths and napkins were extra, drinks, appetizers, dessert, cake cutting fee, microphone, setup.. Everything costs $. It's best to sit down with your fiance and decide which hotels you are considering. We went to at least 10 before we found one that we were comfortable with.
This was a sit down formal dinner, I don't believe that guests should have to work to eat at a formal affair. A buffet is 2 much hassle, people take more than they should, and you end up having to foot the bill when the kitchen has to prepare more food.

Where is this wedding being held, there's going to be a major difference in the same reception held in New York as opposed to Lincoln, NE. How much are you serving in the way of food/alcohol? What you should do is decide on what you can afford to spend on your wedding reception...THEN start looking. It will make things much easier rather than get your heart set on something, and later realize you cannot afford it. Congrats and good luck to you.

Believe it or not, a sit down dinner can be cheaper than a buffet.
I suggest you make appointments to meet with the event/wedding coordinators at the hotels in your area and lay out what you're looking for. They can give you estimates.
