When I boot my Sony viao laptop running XP the system first loads a directory of system 32 files I then click to cancel and then operation proceeds normally. Any idea how to stop it loading?

Hey Dude,

Yes, this is fairly common.

Open up regedit by going to Start|Run and type in REGEDIT

You need to navigate EXACTLY to this spot
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SOFTWARE
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Run]

In there, if you see ANYTHING with only "" (two double quotes) on the right side "DATA" column, delete that key. LEAVE EVERYTHING ELSE.

That will stop the C:\windows\system32 folder from popping up.

linked to system32 are the keyboard and mouse. System 32 runs after the hardware configuration is loaded in RAM (random access memory).
try to delete those files. or try to reinstall windows XP.

The "Windows Defender" Program http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx lets you choose startup processes, using system explorer (not windows explorer) it can be found under the tools menu in defender, then there is a list of all the start up programs, find the system32 one and there should be a disable option.
