Mostly agree w/ "TV Guy" but I would also like to say Plasma is going away for the most part for anything less than 50" many companies stopped making plasma sets completely. The short answer is this:
For a home theater where it will be used in one place in a dark area w/o any static images go plasma.
For general purpose, go with LCD. LCD has no burn in, it will be around for a long time and will not glare like plasma will as soon as any light hits the screen. Also you can move them as much as you want without worry(Plasma's gas pockets can leak into each other making a terrible picture if moved too often). Also LCD has a longer life.
As for brand or model, that is another discussion. In my experience Panasonic has the best plasmas period. As for LCD, I really prefer the Sony's high contrast, but you should look @ Samsung and JVC also as many people like them as well.
Hope this helped.

This is one of the most commonly asked questions and if you "search for questions" you will find some great answers. So do your homework before you ask.
Here are some quick facts:
If you plan to buy a TV smaller than 40", you will buy an LCD
If you buy a TV larger than 50", unless you have lots of money, you will buy a projection TV, probably DLP.
The trick is what to buy between 40" and 50".
If you play lots of games, buy an LCD, otherwise Plasma offers better blacks, better contrast, more colors and are cheaper than LCDs.
What brand? Do your research at cnet.com, consumer reports, etc., but visit also a couple of stores (Best Buy and Circuit City)
