G'day,

Melbourne.... wellll... where should I start?
1. First of all... it is true that some people do not like the weather in Melbourne (it can get 4 seasons in one day). However, if you read the first article from The Age newspaper, you will find out that the weather is still more preferable than the other cities. Sure you can have 42C day like a month ago, but almost immediately you'll get a much cooler weather pretty soon afterwards. It is very rarely that you got 2 or 3 consecutive days of hot weathers (unlike Sydney, Brisbane or Perth).
2. Melbourne is a city of diversity. If you are a newcomer, and you do not look 'Anglo-Saxon', you do not feel like an 'alien', since you can find almost every race in the world walking in the city. They are both immigrants and overseas students.
3. THE FOOD!! Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Thai, All-you-can-eat, African, Lebanese, Mexican, Sea Food... anything else? All available and lots of them in a very-very-very affordable price
4. Pretty good public transport system. With one ticket, you can switch from train, tram and bus. They do not always come on-time, but still reliable and improving.
5. SHOPPING!!! Original branded clothing sold very cheap. There are even shopping tour, where the participants are taken to retails outlets just for shopping. Big temptations for ladies.
6. Crime rates... just read the second article on the bottom.
7. Cost of Living... I'll say it's second most expensive city after Sydney. Altho I have to say that some cities in Queensland can be more expensive to live.
8. Night Life... hmmmm... I'll say the centre of nite activities will be Crown Casino and Docklands. Altho there are still plenty of cafe's and clubs scattered around the suburbs as well.
9. Tourist attraction. This is the area that I think Sydney is better than Melbourne, since it has most of it's attraction within its suburbs. Most Melbourne attraction are pretty much out of Melbourne, such as the gold mines in the cities of Bendigo and Ballarat, The Great Ocean Road, Lakes Entrance, Grampians, skiing in Mt. Buller etc.

Running out of ideas, but I hope that I can at least give you some more informations that have been provided by the answerer before me.

Good luck :)

NB: Golden Girl... the Australian capital city is Canberra. Sydney is the biggest city in Australia. Melbourne used to be the capital of Australia before Canberra was 'created'.

Living in Cairns is really nice. Very tropical and laid back, lots of tourists, plenty of job opportunities, friendly people and great infrastructure but *very* hot and humid in the summer months. Another great place is Perth. Fantastic city - a really special place. I guess it all depends on what type of work you are after and the wage /cost of living factors that vary across the country. If you do move here, I'm sure you won't regret your decision. I won't mention the places I don't care for as I don't want to offend anyone! By the way we're not all "racist bible bashers arrogant judgemental etc" in Queensland and I guess anyone who says so is perhaps being judgemental themselves?

for 1 who says living in australia is like living in south africa? if you mean that the white folk treat the abouriginals appaulingly i have to say your spot on, (i'm not black im white) but what exactly do you mean by that? however i would compare qld to middle america. racist bible bashers arrogant judgemental etc. sydney thinks it is the best place in auz and the people there a quite arrogant and not very friendly. i would say melbourne hands down, the weather aint tropical but cairns is like 35 to 45C in summer. thats bloody hot, melbounes climate is more bearable. there is a great music and clubbing scene in melbourne, there is less violent crime re muggings etc so your safer than in sydney for eg. the people are less arrogant than qld or syd. you'll get better housing for the cost in melbourne than syd or qld. why not think about adelaide? it was the first city built by free settlers, mel, syd and brisbane were all built by convicts. adelaide is more like melbourne than syd or brisbane, plus you get great beaches, but watch out for the great whites :) they have figured out how to shoot out of the water and knock surfers off their boards to eat em. clever things the sharks but no fun for surfers.

The gold coast in Queensland is the best.
I moved up from NSW and Queensland is so much more relaxed.
The gold coast can get pretty hectic, but you never get bored.
