Pick something cheap, like Bud Light or Miller Lite. After a few beers, nobody will be thinking about the taste. And it's safe to serve for a variety of people. Even beer snobs I know will heartily drink cheap beer if it's the only thing available.

If I were throwing a party tomorrow I would get something in the mid price range and get a lot of it.
I would probably buy Budweiser, a lot of people like Bud and it won't give your friends the nasty headache that super cheap beer will give them.
And you can afford to buy enough Bud for your friends to have a good time.

Serve the best you can afford. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale will get you lots of compliments. About $22 a case.

A keg of Bud Light always works for me. Don't get Miller Lite. That sh!t might as well be labeled as water.

Bud Light, that way the guests will not get as tipsy for the long walk home (no drunken driving hopefully). Happy New Year!
