Over the years Popular Science had some ads in the back pages on how to build your own helicopter. The power source for this design was a ram jet.

Ram jets have no moving parts and a very simple one can be made using differeent sizes of pipe nested together.

Bacically you fabricate a venturi (ejector) inside of a larger venturi. Air and fuel (propane) are drawn into the smaller venturi wher it is mixed then burned at its outlet. (kind of like a bunsen burner) The combustion products are directed into the inlet of the second larger venturi where additional air is drawn in .

The thrust to weight ratio is horrid without forward motion to drive air into the inlet but you can develop thrust without a rotating compressor.

The mythbusters jet engine actually worked!!
The one they did from vacuum cleaner parts.
I should warn you that, it is very dangerous sice highly combustible fuel is used!!
