It's a short drive outside the lake district but I'd recommend Bank End Farm, Roadhead, Carlisle CA6 6NU.
It's a small, working sheep farm situated on the river Black Lyne, kind of in the middle of nowhere. They have two self-catering cottages. Astonishing scenery, charming old farm buildings, comfortable, clean and first-rate accomodations in an absolutely uncrowded area. Quite beautiful and romantic.
An easy drive to Scotland, the Lake District, Alton, Gretna, Hadrian's Wall, etc. Good walking from the farm.
Proprietors are friendly and gracious.
Stayed there on a visit from the USA and cannot wait to go back.
Their website is at:

If you book in there, please tell them Doc and Mari said hello and that we miss them.

It's a great place, but only in the spring, summer or autumn, if you are thinking about coming at this time of year, forget it, it really is wet, cold and miserable. But if you decide to come anyway, just type in Log Cabins Lake District, that will get you all you want
