I am wondering what an internist, or MD in internal medicine does. What are their jobs and duties? What kind of problems would require an internist? Thanks!

An internist MD is a doctor who looks for things wrong with you on the inside of the body and can perform the right blood work and procedures to look at the functioning of your inside such as Kidney and other organs instead of just infections or viruses. Internal medicine is medication for the inside problems of the body. Problems which can arise to needing an internist is when a regular doctor cannot find anything such as a virus or other infection going on by his findings so you proceed on to a doctor who is more qualified for his/her work as your doctor for the inside of your body functions.

"internist" manages chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart failure etc w/ medications. he can also manage acute issues like heart attacks or pneumonias. internists often serve as primary care doctors.
cardiologist, nephrologists, pulmonologist etc have all completed training as an internist, but then undertook extra training in their respective fields.
