In Buddhist teaching, the law of karma, says only this: `for every event that occurs, there will follow another event whose existence was caused by the first, and this second event will be pleasant or unpleasant according as its cause was skillful or unskillful.' A skillful event is one that is not accompanied by craving, resistance or delusions; an unskillful event is one that is accompanied by any one of those things. (Events are not skillful in themselves, but are so called only in virtue of the mental events that occur with them.)

Pious activities such as charity, penance and pilgrimage, especially when performed in anticipation of material benefits, such as a higher standard of living on earth or an elevated birth on the heavenly planets.

for e.g,Hindus don't eat meat because they think that they will then be reborn as an animal

There are 4 types of karma, but basically karma is all about settling of "accounts" so to speak spiritually Karma and re- incarnation are inextricably intertwined. We, as a result of deficiencies in previous life- times have to return over and over again until we master our passions and learn LOVE.There are other planets and universes of GOD but where you re -incarnate is inexorably linked with the lessons you have to learn and the relationships that are involved. When the student is eventually ready the Master appears and the final journey home begins, this final journey ends the cycle of birth and re -birth.Lest I forget the passions that bogs us down to this lower universes[ earth and the likes] are [ 1] anger [ 2] vanity [3 ] lust [4] greed 5] and undue attachments

The way I think of karma, it's not like I'll win the lotto if I help an old lady across the street, or a safe will fall on me if I cheat on a loved one. Karma is about living with the way that your actions make you feel. If I am a good person, I feel good about myself and enjoy life. If I am a bad person, I have all of my bad actions constantly eating away at me.
What about the people with no conscience, you say? No one is truly without a conscience. Some people try to kill their conscience with money, drugs, sex, what have you, but they only create their own living hells, and karma gets them when they die lonely deaths.

Karma is the belief that the actions that you do in life have an affect on your afterlife.

Basically when you do something bad you get bad karma and when you do something good you get good karma. You need a lot of good karma to basically get in to "heaven". If you have a lot of bad karma you don't go to heaven, you have to come back to Earth and try again until you get enough good karma.

This is basically the simpliest definition...it's actually a bit more complicated. But I think this answers your question.

yes karma is about cause and effect. Because of past karma that is why we are reborn as human or animal again.... WE ARE NOT GRADUATED from our past life. there is also a reason why u and your parents are together is becus of past lifes. We are all connected. may be u and your parents were couples ,friends,enemies,cousins,.. why some people are born rich and some are born as an animal or insects or bacteria is becus of what they did in the past . may be they ill treated animals very badly or done some thing very very bad or horrible thats why...like some people eg steve irwin he is sooo popular soo loving but he died its also karma. thats why do good now like charity, helping pple, donation will help u lighten your karma. there is a reason why u r born is becus we r like a student who never graduate from school. we never do enough good deeds thats why we r here. For pple who do lots and lots of good things, when they die they may turn to a deva(angel) or be like goddess of mercy(Guan yin). the reason she is a goddess is becus she has a heart of a Buddha so when she died she does not want 2 be enlightened. She vow to be a Bodhisattva so she can save pple. never ill treat animals or your parents or cheat pple or do any sinful things. if u do any of it,it WILL come back 2 us. WE ARE THE OWNER OF OUR KARMA. IT WILL FOLLOW US this life or may be the next life. and it may be double of what u have done like alicia keys sings what goes around comes around what goes up must come down. and its true i strongly believe in karma. No matter who you are. SO WATCH OUR THOUGHTS, SPEECH AND ACTION. BE MINDFUL !!! KARMA RETURNS TO US LIKE A BOOMERANG. MAY IT BE A GOOD DEEDS OR BAD DEEDS. WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.

It can be.

In my tradition, Karma refers to the Universal principle that whatever I send out into the world comes back to me 3 times over, whether the original action was good, bad, or indifferent.

Most times, this return is more immediate, but it could be revisited on me in my next re-incarnation, depending on the magnitude of the original act.

(that's why I think "W" is in deep doo doo)

For every action there is a reaction but not necessarily an equal one. It's about the correlation between action and consequences of that action. Some think rebirth the cycle of life is only broken when one transcends the human binds

Yes and no. Karma is a natural physical force. If you live this life morally, your next life will have better opportunities. However, how you live this life affects you present as well.
