You should take him in a crate when you go to work if you have the space otherwise ask like a neighbor or someone you trust to watch the puppy for you when your gone.

Being kenneled/crated for that long won't hurt the puppy. That's part of what crate training is for. If your dog sleeps through the night, 6-8 hours, in his crate then this is no different.
Make sure water is available, blankets and a few toys. Just be ready to take him outside immediately upon returning home. He'll be fine.

If you work full time, the puppy will more than likely be in a crate for more than 4-5 hours a day.
Puppies demand a LOT of time and a LOT of attention. Try getting an adult dog from the shelter. Puppies need to be walked ever couple hours and 5 hours is just too long for them to have to sit and hold it. besides, they CAN'T physically hold it for 5 hours, their bladders aren't big enough.
Go with an adult, and check your local shelters

Mine got very aggitated in a crate, busted out of it, and tore the house up. Puppies are a LOT of work!!!
Please consider Mouth_of_da_South's post...her recommendation about getting an adult may be just the answer to not only your prayers but the dogs too as you'll be saving it's life.

It would suite the puppy better if you take him to a taxidermist and put him on a stick for everyone to view. Or better yet get a infant human child and put him in a box and leave it there for the same time. No? Well whats the difference between the two things that can't fend for themselves? Its a puppy, its not developed, it needs love and attention, DON'T TORTURE IT.

Dogs are a pack animal. If they are left alone , especially as a puppy, they will suffer behavior problems. Depression, destructiveness, obsessive barking. Until you are in a position to provide a puppy with the full attention needed , you are asking for trouble. That is why cats are perfect for working people. Most cats are solitary and can be left alone for days with proper food and water.

Yes! Puppies need room to romp and play. If you have to keep your pup confined, get a large dog cage, line it with newspaper, and provide food and water and a few toys and a dog bed.
Do you not have a back yard, or a room that you can designate as a "puppy room" where he can stay while you are unavailable?

It should'nt hurt him too much. I'm just about to get a puppy as well, and it will probably be left home for about the same amount of time, and from research, as long as you play with it a lot and give it lots of attention when you get home, you'll be fine. Just leave something like a chew toy and food to keep him busy.

you might want to rethink getting a dog while working full-time, if there's no one else to take care of him for several hours a day. you'll end up with a bored, lonely pet that isn't properly socialized and will most likely take up destroying things or barking incessantly. it's not fair to the dog.
