A lot of smaller dogs are very nervous of young kids, particularly dogs who aren't used to kids and have been babied. You realize you can't allow this behaviour. It definitely will escalate and she will bite one day. If you can't take her to obedience, you need to teach her yourself. A dog can never be allowed to growl at a person, adult or child. Keep her beside you in a sit stay and tell any kids to ignore her - no eye contact, no talking to her, no trying to pet her. Let her go up to them if she's ok with it and make sure the kids know how to treat the dog. Do not tolerate even one growl.

You have a dog that does not like kids. WHY is that so difficult for many people to understand?? You are aware of it so keep the dog away from kids..........

I have two Maltese. I have had them since they were pups. They don't like kids either. Why don't they like kids? They don't know what kids are.........Most kids approach a dog with noise and lots of movement. Kids look like giant noisy machines to a dog that is not used to kids. It would scare you too. Kids grab at small dogs to pick them up and they don't care how they pick them up either, by a leg or a tail......

You do not need a school. If this worries you that much, hold your dog or put her in your bedroom when kids visit. You are not going to teach a dog to tolerate kids if the kids act like most kids do.

do you know the history of your dog? it is very possible she had bad experiences with children in her former home, which is why she is threatened by them now. if i were you, i'd keep her away from kids -- put her outside when kids are at your house, etc. you don't want a bitten child on your hands. maybe speak to an expert about how to acclimate her to the presence of children, let her know that they are not going to hurt her. good luck!
