You may have a DVI input which can be easily adapter to an HDMI. Or if its an older TV your best option may be Component. DirecTV receivers do support Component but they may at some point in the future be subject to restrictions for anti-piracy reasons, which is why they would prefer to have you use HDMI.

HDTV's come in 3 flavors depending on when you bought yours. The original HDTV's only came with component video. The next generation came with component and DVI. In the last 2 years, they all come with component and HDMI.

If you only have component, then you are stuck with analog HD. If you have DVI, then you can buy an HDMI to DVI cable or adapter.

HDMI should look like a large USB or firewire port. But, if you want to make sure, you can always go to your TV manufacturer's web site and check out the specs.
