Eid is a Muslim celebration, they have 2 every year. It's similar to the Christian Christmas. The Muslims have a special prayer to say on Eid, also one of the Eids is to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

Eid is an Islamic religious holiday.
there are 2 types of Eid and both their timings depend on the lunar cycles
The one that usually comes earlier in the year is the smaller Eid-al-Fitr. It celebrates the passing of the holy month of Ramadan (30 days of fasting from dawn til dusk).
The second and larger one, Eid-al-Adha celebrates the end of Hajj (the holy pilgrimage to Mecca all muslims have to make sometime in their life). It is celebrated with the sacrafice of an animal (goat, sheep, ram, cow, chicken) on behalf of each family that can afford it. The animal's meat is then distributed: 1/3 for the family, 1/3 for the poor/donation, and 1/3 for friends.
both eids are celebrated by entire communities in their local mosques or places of worship. In the morning, there is a HUGE group prayer in which all muslims must participate in (except for those incapable of praying or coming to the place or worship)
Optional:
People wear nice clothes, women put henna on their hands, awesome food is prepared, families get together, presents are distributed, etc.

As far as I know, eid means holiday in Arabic. There are different eids in Islam just as there are different Christian holidays. That's what my friend in Baghdad told me.
I don't know the meaning of the eid that is being celebrated now in Iraq. I remember when I was in Baghdad on New Years Eve, 2004/2005, the Iraqis were firing their AK-47s up in the air in celebration. I thought that they were celebrating New Years.

Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated around New Years, and Eid-ul-Fitr is celebrated around the end of November. Eid is a muslim holiday, and its date depends on the moon.

Today's Eid celebrates the Abraham's conviction to God. This story is also in the Christian bible. God asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son, and Abraham was just getting ready to do so, when God stopped him. Eid celebrates extreme faith, like that of Abraham.
