hi, my furniture is getting ripped to shreds and people here said i shouldn't declaw my cats myself even though i can't afford to go to the vet. so to stop them scratching everything up, a few minutes ago i wrapped their paws up in duct tape instead. thing is, now mittens and mr. snickers won't stop licking the tape. lick, lick, lick, the sound is driving me bonkers!!!! also, when i shoo them with the broom to make them stop licking, they run funny. what should i do?

Sometimes obsessive licking is a sign of nervousness.
If your cats are damaging your furniture, get a scratching post and rub it with catnip.
Also, there are sheaths you can put over your cats' claws that prevent them from clawing. This is much better than duct tape - which, frankly, was not a good solution.

Asumng that you are serious, I have several pieces of advice:
1. Take the duct tape off of their paws and never do that again.
2. Don't even THINK about declawing them yourself.
3. Buy large double-sided tape and stick it wherever the cats are scratching.
4. Buy a cat nail clipper, and trim their claws. Just the tips! On second thought, have someone else do it, after they read a website that explains how.
5. Get them a scratching post, or a catnip scratching box, or a piece of carpet just for them.
6. Think about giving your cats to somebody who can afford to keep them well.

Cats hate the scent of citrus peels. If you rub some orange or lemon peels on her paw like above or below her wound (on the wound would only hurt her worse) it is likely that she won't want her mouth to go near it. If she ignores it and keeps at it (when a cat is taking care of a wound, it might do what it won't usually), however, I'd keep the cone on. It's heart-breaking, but it will keep her wound from getting worse.

Take the tape off. How would you like having your fingers taped up? As recommended before, get some CAT nail clippers (about $4 at Wal-Mart) and trim their nails. Be careful because if you trim the white part of the nail, they will bleed and possibly bleed to death. Get them a cat scratching log. It's a piece of wood covered by fabric and then rope is wrapped around that for them to scratch. They only cost $5 at Wal-Mart and cats love them. Mine have already scratched up 2 and just started the third. They never scratch anything else that I am aware of.

well its because you put duct tape on their paws!! They are licking their paws cause they want the duct tape off!! Get a spray bottle if they keep ripping the furniture.
Why'd you get cats anyways if you can't afford a vet?! What if they get sick? What if they need meds when they are older? How do you afford the never ending supply of food?
IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD THE VET
YOU CANT AFFORD THE PET!!!

First off take the tape gently off thier paws. Now try putting the tape over the areas they scratch. There is also sticky tape you can get at stores that cats don't like. Also try a cat scratcher and put it in front of a place they like to scratch.

Dude, it's the duct tape. You'll either come up with the money to declaw them, or you'll put up with ripped furniture, and your relationship with your cats won't be so good. That is, considering you're really serious, which, I have my doubts.

-.- Cats HATE tape on their paws, it's probably driving them more crazy than you! XDD!! Take the tape off their paws, and get somebody to clip their claws reguraly (sp?)
Whatever you do, DON'T I repeat, DON'T declaw then yourself! If you want them declawed, save up money or something, would you want your mother or father to rip off your nails?!

You know, PETA disturbs me. They are fanatically crazed about too many things. But I have a real desire to send them your way. Because at least the resultant hate e-mails would teach you to stay off the internet and quit asking obvious questions to try to get a rise out of people who actually care about other living creatures.

golly, you really have a problem. my answer in your case is to take them out of the tape and let them run free. maybe they will find another home. maybe you would do better with a pet rock or something.
