The Scots hate the English. The English celebrated Christmas but until the 1970's didn't celebrate New Year, so the Scots do just the opposite. Nuff said.

It was more likely because our austere Calvinist ancestors didn't approve of the festival celebrating Christ's birthday being marked by drunkenness and debauchery so they discouraged any celebration but that is why New Year is more celebrated in Scotland.
