Canon does make excellent cameas, and they could very well make the most cameras in the $200 to $400 range. Other excellent brands out there are Nikon, Sony and olympus. I own aSony Cyber-shot and love it. Has 6 MP at 12X optical. Fugi also makes some very good ones. So don't be hasty, look around. Canon does not cover the whole spectrum.

That depends on what you are going to do with the camera. If you want to take snap shot home/family/friends photos, most cameras are well suited like the coolpix and others.

If you are more interested in commercial quality then you should get a good camera with exchangeable lenses like the Nikon D200 or the Canon TXi.

Also budget can play a big role in your choices.

It depends on what qualities your looking for. Do you want a camera with more zoom. Or one with better picture quality. There are so many different qualities certain cameras have and others don't. I like Sony Cybershot cameras they have a little of each quality. They also have a great picture quality. Hope this helps.
