I am trying to take a pic for a dog show or I will not be in the show.

How about a bunch of throw pillows that you have around your house? You can make them into kind of a mound and set him in the middle. Good luck posing him! My (non-show) pug won't stay still.

put your pug on the window during medium light outside and use your flash. you know how to frame your shot i hope. that is all i can suggest for a potentially great background no matter the color of your pug. the most certain shot is to take the dog somewhere early in the morning light where the background is obviously good. note contrast.

identitynumber7's is the best idea so far I think but I've seen people take their dogs into the photo places and just get plain backgrounds and do other stuff but you can always give that a try

I used a sheet to do mine. That or a towel. Anything that is a solid color or will make the pug stand out.

Get a piece of solid colored cloth (black if possible), drape it over a box or a chair and focus in tight on the dog.

If its for a dog show I would take a piece of plain colored cloth that is a different color from your dog so your dog won't blend in and drape it over something and position your dog in front of it.

Then mess around with Picasa, it's free and easy to use for light enhancing
