I am into the "New Year's philosophy " that you start the new year meal with 1) something green (keeps money in the house) 2) pork (I forget what that was for) 3) black-eyed peas (good luck). Since I live alone, I have this nice, small pork shoulder. I'm looking for a recipe for it. Usually, I barbeque, but I don't want to do that this year. I have lots of spices, herbs and seasonings, so I can really get buck wild with whatever you throw at me. I also have potatoes and other ingredients to add. I just want something new and different. I mean, there's only so much you can do with black eyed peas, collard greens and corn bread -but the meat can have a real taste. I've got wines, vinegars, everything to work with.

Girl, with all the seasonings that you have in the house, the flavors are endless! I usually put mine in the crockpot and season it with Lawry's seasoning salt, garlic powder (PPLENTY of it!) and black pepper. I throw in my veggies (onions, carrots, potatoes, and bell pepper) and pour in some water or broth. I set it on high and let it cook for 6-8 hours or on low overnight. I eat mine with rice and dinner rolls, but greens and cornbread is good too. I don't do black-eyed peas, but my hubby does. You can use ANYTHING you like, though and trust me, you will not go wrong....just experiment. Also, a can of cream of mushroom soup is ALWAYS good to put in (with a little water (half a can) and a dash of thyme) instead of water or broth. Good luck, and enjoy! Happy 2007!

Do you like pozole? It's a soup. Cut the meat up into bute-sized chuncks and place in a pot of water(a good-sized pot so you can have leftovers), with a whole, peeled onion. Bring water to a boil and let it simmer for about 2-3 hours or until the meat is fork tender. Add about 4 cloves of minced garlic and a tablespoon of dried oregano. Add large can of red enchilada sauce, a large can of hominy, and salt to taste. Let simmer 30 more minutes. Garnish with lemon or lime wedges, fresh cilantro, and diced onions. Enjoy.
This recipe is not measured because I got it from my Grandma who doesn't measure anything. This makes a BIG pot, so you can cut it in half since you live alone.

I was going to suggest putting it in a crock pot after rubbing it with olive oil and some spices and about 1/2 way through cooking pour a can of Coke over it. It makes the meat sweet and tender at the end of cooking I shred it up and pour BBQ sauce over it and have BBQ sandwiches but since you don't want BBQ guess that isn't the idea you're looking for.
So rub it with oil and season it with what you have, put in a covered roaster with about 1/2 inch of water and roast in the oven, basting as you go. Throw in the veggies with about and hour of cooking left.

Here is a recipe that is used for pork chops, but I bet you can adapt it to shoulder. Also the second link has over 8000 recipes where you may find one as well.

I found these, they sound great. Let me know when dinner is ready, I'll bring the milk! :-)
