It was part of dell's plan when they began to sell direct to consumer. It was there way of selling computers at a lower cost to consumers. You cut out the middleman so there is not such a high markup. Back when they started dell was very good and sold very high quality computers. But a closer look at dell now shows that the quality has gone down while prices are close to the competitors.

I think it has more or less to do with Dell trying to keep their computers as cheap as possible. By ordering directly from Dell, you eliminate the middle man, in this case, Best Buy or Circuit City. Also, I'm not sure about this, but I think Best Buy and Circuit City, would probably make Dell pay a small fee for displaying Dell computers. Even if they don't charge Dell a fee, BB and CC could raise the price of the Dell computers in order to make a profit.

Dell sells the Gateway brand at those stores. They reserve the higher end "Dell" machines for online. I believe it is because they want to let people customize the Dell brand with what ever accessory people want and you don't get that ability at a chain store like bestbuy or circuit city.

They keep their margins so low that they cannot afford to be widely distributed. That said, they tend to put an older generation of computer parts in their PCs, like an older, slower CD drive or such to save costs. That works in a way, but it also offers earlier obsolecence in a PC to save a few bucks. Some stores don;t want to deal with that.

Dell's primary distribution was direct buy. They had a good press for that years ago as progressive, but every PC maker has a good online supply chain now, so it isn;t so special anymore.

DELL consciously made a decision to set up their own vertical supply chain away from retailers and go direct to the consumer. It was a controversial move designed to gain market share quickly.
Cut prices, cut out the middle man.
They've been successful with gaining market share. Not so successful in driving profit dollars to the bottom line.

I don't know- its annoying because I have to order everything through dell..I wish I could just go buy my ink from Best Buy. I wish I would have known this before I ordered my computer.
