It is a bonding thing they do - take it as a HUGE compliment. As something he used to do with his mother - and now he is choosing to have that type of "closeness" with you. I have seen some shelter cats do it to someone they had just met - probably in hopes to bond so quickly with the human and become part of the family. It is a great thing - almost like a cat hug!

They all do that at some point. Some do it before laying down as if they're preparing their spot. Others will knead a blanket and suck on it at the same time simulating when they were nursing. I think that is just a security thing. I've heard it can come from being taken away from the mom too soon but it could also just be a comforting thing for them.
Don't worry about it. It's totally normal and just another thing that makes cats unique and endearing.

Cats start to knead when they are happy. I mean like when they are truly happy. Happy with their life. I have 3 cats and we adopted one of them from a shelter and he didnt knead at all and then after a couple years went by he started kneading. It means that he is happy now, or maybe if he was on a cover that was balled up he could have been trying to flatten it out to lay on.

I think cats are very sketchy animals. It takes some longer to be 100% comfortable than others. Even if you think that he was, maybe he wasn't! Kneading is a comfort thing. As long he isn't doing it on your leg and hurting you, don't woory about it!

When cats get older, they get more affectionate, and their instincts start to kick in a little more. Right now, I guess he is getting more comfortable in your home. Kneading their paws shows that they are getting ready to sit down or get more friendly with you.

Maybe he just realized he could do it? It's nothing to be worried about. My cat used to knead his paws into peoples hair; much like he was trying to braid it or something.
