Yes, an AK or any other selective fire or full auto firearm is legal if you have the proper ATF Stamp and paid the tax. Some states restrict this further, so you must know you state's laws.

The semi-auto only clone is perfectly legal.

Those made to shoot semi-auto only are legal in most areas. The standard AK47 requires a special permit. You can get one after an in-depth background check and a visit to your home, but expect the BATF to make a spot-check every 3 months or so to make sure you're playing by the rules. Very few of these permits are issued. I suspect the largest number of them by far are in the armories of the movie studios.

Are you legal to own any firearm if so, you can as long as it is a semi-auto model. If you can own a rifle you can own a AK47 but, if you get caught with a full auto...loaded or not you are looking at visiting the Federal Prison for some years. Do not what so ever get caught with any modified firearm what so ever in your position because you will go to jail.

Semi-automatic only variants are legal and for the last decade or so there has been a requirement (by the ATF) that certain parts (like furniture) have to be made in the USA. In the 1980s it was "no holds barred" importing from China (pistols and rifles), Clinton ha dthat stopped.
