Our dog has bitten our 18 month old daughter and we don't feel we can keep him any longer. We don't want to destroy him if we can help it. He's a large breed, German Shepherd/Great Dane mix, 11 years old. He's bitten one other person in his life, after being provoked. We'd like to find a shelter for him if possible. We're in the Los Angeles area. Does anyone know of a place?

A dog that age is very difficult to find a new home for. Also, it is near the end of it's life and may be having physiological problems that are causing irrational behavior (humans aren't the only mammals that get senility, Alzheimer's, and dementia). My brother had a lab that started to do the same thing, had to put it down. The vet found that it had a brain tumor that they thought was the cause of the behavior.
The responsible thing to do is to take it to the vet and and hold and love it as the vet gives it a euthanizing injection.

Caesar Milan. He's great. Even lives in L.A. An 11 year old dog that hasn't bitten before may have been poked in the eye by the 18 month old child. Never leave them alone together.

YOU take the dog to the vet and have it euthanized. It is a 11 year old dog with a temperment problem. Do not dump your problem on someone else. The chances of this dog being rehomed is SLIM. Do not put it through being ripped away from its family. At least have the courage and decency to do it yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If this dog will bite its own family member what makes you think it wouldn't bite someone else. It has had a long life. It needs to be put down.
