I know it's not perfect, but overall, is it a reliable and good vehicle for families? I want some space in the back too, which is why I want to get a truck.

I have a 2006 Frontier. It's a bit larger but the bed suffers with the size.
I have known many Frontier owners that swear by them. None have complained about them including as far back as 2001. They go forever. In fact, there is a video on the web somewhere of a guy attempting to kill a frontier via smashing it, pushing it into the ocean, driving it under extreme heat in 4x4 for hours, etc etc - and it came out like nothing happened with almost 180k miles on it.
Other than cosmetic issues which Jap cars seem to suffer from after a few years, mechanically I think they are one of the best trucks out there, otherwise I would not have purchased one myself. For the money, for the needs you may have, they are the best I believe and you can't go wrong.

The problem will be finding an owner that will part with one, for a good price. :)

Regarding the breaks. Well, that's all depends on where you live and how handy you are. I replace breaks on all my vehichles and have never gotten away from replacing rotors AND breaks. Never, or VERY rarely. The newer models are improved, and with engine brakes (gas suckers), they are improved at the cost of gas mileage. I believe the 2001 - 2004 milage is superior to the 05, 06, and 07 models but I may be wrong.

Best of all. Test drive it, then test drive a Dodge Dakota and a Toyota. (the only two in competition imo) You will see why the Nissan is the superior beast of them all!

my dad had one. its not a bad truck but its not a great truck either.
as with the rest of the Nissan minitrucks, the breaks werent very good on it and it required replacing quite frequently as did the rotors from warping. i my self have had 4 nissan trucks, and my dad is on maybe his 7th or 8th.

i used to frequent a nissan minitruck board and the break issue is a common thing.

other then that, IMHO, nissan is a much higher quality designed truck then the other imports.

the bed might be your only drawback since its a short short bed.

I dont know what you want it for but I have one. It is a great truck for general use. It has good gass milage and great cappacity. BUT, it has very bad towing capacity and if you hook a trailer to it the fuel economy goes down hill quick. aside from towing trailers it is a great truck.
