I assume you want that because you are painting a dark brown top coat over it?
What time is it? Time to find a new DIY store. They are not very good if they didn't know this.

Why do you want a dark brown undercoat?. If the top coat is going to be brown a grey undercoat would work fine. Or do you mean wood stain? Have you got wood without paint or varnish on, then you need wood stain. These come in all shades up to black. Rawlins make very good ones.

You do not get a dark undercoat, because if you want to paint a lighter colour over it, you will have to put more coats of paint on to cover the undercoat.
If you want a darker colour of wood, you should get a wood stain.

When you state "undercoat" I assume you mean primer? Not finish coat?
If so YES, most primers can be tinted.
Some stores will tell you they can't go with a very dark base to tint primer or undercoater.
But, primer can be tinted.

Most finished dark colours use a generic type undercoat such as dark/medium type grey which is suitable for most finishes and presents no problems in obliteration .

I hate DIY stores. Try a small independent retailer if you can. Or check out the Ronseal website. Also if it comes to it B&Q have a website www.diy.com. Try that.

you can have primer tinted, but not very dark. The reason is,if you have one gal of primer, you need to remove enough of it to replace it with the tint, if you take away to much primer to make room for the tint then your primer becomes tint instead of primer
