"No sooner do we gain some slight knowledge of God from looking at the world, than we turn from the true God and set up in his place an imaginary vision from our own brain. We draw the worship of justice, wisdom and goodness away from the fountainhead, transferring it elsewhere."
"If the First Commandment is against worshipping a false god, the Second Commandment is against worshipping the true God in a false way."
"Idolatry is the graffiti of Satan written right across humanity... Idolatry degrades humanity."
This subject is VAST. We all commit idolatry. So-called sophisticated, educated humanity is just as base as the so-called pagans they ridicule because we all worship what we ought not as none of us can maintain a true image of God and adore him alone. A true view of God can only come through the indwelling and instruction of the Holy Spirit.

Well that depends on your view, from a Christian perspective worshipping any man made image in the form of an idol is a sin, however many of us create idols in our life through things such as addictions and greed, they end up takin the place of God in our hearts, because God desires to be first in our lives, anytime you put anything first that isnt God you risk idolatry.

What's the difference? An idol of stone is merely the creation of someone's idol of the heart.

An idol is an idol. There is no "better" or "worse". To esteem anything or any person above God is still idolitry and rebellion against God.

Both are bad. Anyway, you are worshiping an idol. Stone or not, it's still an idol. Let us hope God removes our idols.

Very well stated argument. I stagnant view of 'the diety known as 'God'' is certainly similar to a set in stone idol. To cast your beliefs into something perminent and lacking dynamism is certainly limiting the powers of that energy.

an idol, is an idol. when our focus is drawn to something other than God... that is the idol, whether in our hearts, our minds or in front of us ....seeking God from your heart will help you get a full true view of Who He is... He reveals Himself to those who seek him fully

Ten Commandments - “ You shall not make for yourself a graven image. You shall not bow down to them or serve them.” …Another Golden Calf fiasco!
“Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there.” God is everywhere we don’t need to make idols to find him.
“God is not in houses of wood and stone, he is in the hearts of men” We all know in our hearts the difference between right and wrong.

I would say an idol in your heart...heck, I want a Buddha statue to carry around with me to baseball games, rock concerts. I wouldn't worship it, but technically it's still an idol.
