Shoes that have padding inside, and aren't too tight. They're called "Naturistics" or something like that. You might want to have them measure your feet first. You should be able to find them in most shoe stores.

Go to Walgreens and by some knee high ted hose. They are superb for helping with circulation. They help prevent vericose veins. Next do your feet swell? If so by shoes that are about 1/2 to 1 size too big. By the end of the day they will fit. The shoes that you should look for should have a good thick sole on them for extra cousion. If you decide to insole I like poly sorb. You may need to try them on at the same time for proper fit. Sometimes I have to take out the insole that is provided in the shoe. Walk around in these shoes. How do the arches feel? Do I have enough support. Try on several pair. If you have one that feels just a little bit better than another you will be better off getting those. I would also look into what nurses where. I wear a boot similar to combat. I served 11 years and my feet are use to them. They work well with my uniform. Next by at least 2 pairs. You need to rotate these out every day to allow them to air out and breath. Wear white socks if you can then absorb better. This sounds crazy. When you get home get on the floor, put your but all of the way to the wall, swing your feet up on the wall so that you are in a 90 degree angle. This is way too awsome for swelling, hurting feet, and hurting legs. It also gives you a nice stretch. I do it twice a day.

Running shoes with good shock absorption. I recommend New Balance, Saucony, or Pearl Izumi sneakers. The type of sneaker you choose will also be determined by whether you supinate (high arch) or pronate (lost or low arch). A reputable shoe store will measure your foot size/width and will check whether you supinate or pronate when you walk.

Shoes that offer plenty of support. You probably want some good cross-trainers, though not necessarily the priciest ones.
