The link below gives exact instructions.

Things You'll Need
a screwdriver
a hammer
a nail
an ice pick
a heavy knife
a strong garbage bag
a bowl or container for the milk
a coconut

1. Place the coconut on a hard, flat surface that will not be damaged. A sturdy cutting board will usually do.
2. Find the soft "eye" of the coconut that will be soft enough to push a Philips screwdriver through. If not, get a nail and a hammer to create the hole.
3. Drain the coconut milk into the bowl.
Note the seam that runs between the "eyes." Follow the seam to the equator of the coconut. A sharp whack with a hand-sized rock will start a crack that runs perpdendicular to the seam. A few more whacks arond the circumference started by this first blow should finish the job. If it's done right, you end up with two equal halves.

I have found a couple of ways depending whether or not you want the milk----
1) Open the coconuts by flinging them onto a cement or rock surface (this is how the monkeys do it!) Don't worry about losing the liquid, as it's not the coconut milk called for in cooking. Each coconut should break in 3 to 4 pieces. It is also possible to open a coconut by piercing the eyes of the coconut with a screwdriver or ice pick, draining the liquid through the holes and placing the coconut in a 400 degrees F oven for 20 minutes. Wrap the coconut in a towel and hit it with a hammer to loosen the shell and split it into pieces.

It's not possible to open a hard coconut safely. Using a drill can hurt you. Using a chainsaw is even worse. And once I saw on the food network that Alton Brown roasted 2 coconuts until they cracked, but you might also accidentally set fire to your house if not careful. I'd say coconuts are the most dangerous foods.

This is my dad's method. You will need 3 items-- a long nail, a hammer and a dish towel (fold it) first you use the nail to punch a hole in it(top or bottom) you drain the liquid in a container, then you put the coconut on the dish towel and you pound it a couple of times until it breaks .After it splits you use the hammer to make smaller pieces so you can remove the meat.

We used a hammer and chisel and when that didn't work we threw it over a second story balcony(making sure nobody was underneath of course) that worked!
