Fungi ARE decomposers. They break down organic matter by secreting enzymes, digesting them outside their cells, and then absorbing the digested food. Fungi and bacteria are very important in recyclnig matter in the ecosystem.

Fungi are special in another way. Most plants have special relationship with microscopic fungi in the soil. Because they have super fine filaments called hyphae, they are able to absorb nutrients and minerals that plants are just not efficient enough to do themselves. So plants use these fungi growing on their roots to absorb nutrients for them, and in return provide some organic nutrients for the fungi.
