Before he was born it was propheised that he will become a saint. His parents were afarid of that. I don't think it was anything that happened during childhood that affected him. In fact, I think, it was the lack of something happening in his childhood that was like a potential energy waiting for a channel to become kinetic.

It was his wandering out of the castle that woke him up to the reality of the one life of the realities of living. You can't forget that once you've seen it, and he had to be there.
