Refrigeration can increase the shelf life of an alkaline battery. They won't make them last longer as far as usage time. Most batteries these days have several years of shelf life so unless you buy your batteries in bulk, there's not much of a point in it. Just keep them in a cool, dry place and all will be okay. You defenitely don't want to put other types of batteries in there. With rechargables the cold can take away some of the charge. There's nothing wrong with it as far as safety as long as they don't come in contact with the food.
