There are two problems. First, the alcohol hand sanitizers can reduce the number of viral particles on your hands, but not eliminate them. Soap and water work better, as you wash all of them down the drain with the friction of hand washing. The virus is pretty hearty, so the hand sanitizers only do a mediocre job of getting it off your hands.

The second problem is that it only take about ten viral particles to make you sick. You release tens of millions of viruses over the course of the illness (which lasts a couple of days). Because it is so easy to transmit, the gel sanitizers don't do enough to stop transmission.

Flu has nil to do with the stomach. Flu is: sudden fever, often lasting three days or more; prominent headache; extreme fatique, weakness that can last for "weeks" (whatever that means); sneezing, stuffy nose sometimes; coughing is common, can be severe; sore throat. The "stomach flu" is an intestinal virus & has nil to do with flu. Hand sanitizers are not effective in preventing illness; regular soap works just as well. The idea is to wash more frequently when feeling ill.

A hand sanitizer doesn't guarantee you won't get sick- it's just a preventive measure. All 3 of my kids have the stomach flu- it is inevitable for some (unless you want to live in a sanitized bubble).

Perhaps the virus that causes stomach flu isn't affected by the chemicals in the sanitizers. There are some tough bugs out there...

You really need to just wash with soap and water to get rid of e.coli and other bacteria that cause and can spread stomach flu. I personally don't think those hand sanitizers are really worth much.

Most hand sanitizers are anti-bacterial and the flu is a virus
