If you plan on recording vocals I recomend a cheap but better than stage mics, like the Samsung C01. With a software program that has compression and equalizing abilities you can make the flat, original signal sound like professional quality.

I suggest a quality Audio Interface first. Most come with a DAW
( Digital Audio Workstation ). At least in demo form, but can usually be upgraded realatively cheap.
I suggest a Presonus Firebox ( Firewire Interface ).
or if you only have USB connectivity, then Use a Lexicon
Lambda $299cdn or Omega ( A little more costly but better than Lambda ). They both come with Cubase LE.
Idealy you want something with good preamps, this determines the quality of input signal. A good quality Condenser Mic will do the trick as well. AKG makes some very good quality Mics.
There are tons of tutorials on the net to get started with Cubase LE. I would suggest an Interface with a seperate power supply,
as opposed to a direct source USB or Firewire powered.
It puts a strain on your ports power. Sometimes causing a Hum or Buzz when recording. I will be posting some useful information in the near future on my website, as I offer support for these kinds of issues.
( www.plexusrecords.com ) Add this site to your favorites, you'll be glad you did. I test most gear for a local music store, so they know what gear is best to sell and offer support for.

Cubase LE, will be your most user friendly DAW for someone
starting in music recording. You will also want a computer that is fairly good as this will also have an impact on things.

The microphone plugs into the (headphones sized) input with the PINK RING around it located on the back of your computer http://mgi13.meritel.net/~mcr/cascade/inside/pcsound.jpg
