This is puzzling. If the dog were trying to "sing" along, I would think that it would do so with all of the people. The difference might be in the frequencies of the notes. Does your roommate play higher pitch notes than your kids? If so, that is probably the reason for the howling. It's certainly not a reflection on anyone's playing. Howling is not crying. It's joining in a communication effort. Whimpering is crying.

Dogs have super sensitive ears and can hear ten times better than we can. I would say that your roomate is hitting a note that your dog doesn't care for. On the other hand though your dog could like it and is just singing along. My sisiter plays piano and her dog sits by the piano and howls when he wants her to play, he barks if he doesn't want to hear a song and howls alon with his favorite ones.

Some sounds are painful to a dog's ears: You might notice your dog howling when there is a siren beind sounded in the street too.
Other than that, I really don't know either.

My dog does that to maybe he is singing and your roomate really is good or it could just be the certain type of piano that she has and it sounds really really high pitch to him and he could be telling you that it hurts his ears!

Maybe he does suck. Or maybe he's making more noise on it that a kid would (unless your kids are really good and can play chords and melodies).
