For the last few months, I've been getting a muscle ache on my lower back, right above the butt, after 10 to 15 minutes of running on a treadmill. I've changed my sneakers - got new ones and that really didn't help. I've tried stretching right before the run too, but that didn't help much either. This is becoming a real pain... and preventing me from pursuing more aggressive training. Any help would be extremely helpful.

Go see a physical therapist. No one can diagnose over Y!A. It could be a tendon, or a your sciatic nerve. You shouldn't do anything that worsens your pain though.

Have a trained runner (or trainer) look at your running style. You couldn't be the first one that induced injury due to a quirk in your running style.

Second, talk to a sports medicine clinic. It is possible that you have one leg shorter than the other (most people do). In my case, when I put in that little pad under my short leg's heel, my back pain went away.

A distant second alternative to this would be a chiropractor, who would also check for problems w/ hip and spin alignment.

Third, check with your local runner's shop. If you call your running shoes "sneakers" it is entirely possible that simply exchanged one set of bad shoes for another set of bad shoes. The last time I bought running shoes I was glad that it only cost me $150 for the pair.

Could it be the cyatic nerve? Maybe you can get a form of tendonitis or bursitis in the area. Maybe your pinching a nerve?Try taking an anti inflamatory. If it gets bad, go to the doc.
