When we get infections they like to stay in one area. In that one area they are easier to deal with. Like a cold stays in the head, particularly the nose.
When you do vigorous exercise with an infection the increased blood flow can shift the infectious agent into other areas of the body where they are not so easy to control.
The result is that you get infections and problems that the body finds it difficult to deal with, and which therefore last a lot longer. This is why athletes tend to be very fit but not terribly healthy.
If you've got a cold, stay at home, drink lots of fluids, (not beer), take paracetamol. Have the cold!
Then go back to the gym.

Oh, yeah. It's totally okay to work out when you have a head cold. It will probably even make you feel better. (But don't push yourself too hard, obviously.) My college dance major friends and I always danced with colds, since we could never afford to miss class or performances. Just drink a ton of water and bundle up afterward (don't go wandering around with no hat or scarf in the 5-degree cold after getting all sweaty).
As the other respondents noted, as long as it's in the head, exercise is fine. But if the illness is anywhere else in the body or below the neck, exercise is not so good.
I recommend zinc as well. It's sort of a natural immune system booster (I once cleared up a two-year-old case of plantar warts with a few months of oral zinc supplements). Just don't use the nasal spray - I believe it's been associated with loss of smell.

It is actually very bad for your body to do physical exercise whilst you have a fever or are under the weather, it can cause problems with the heart such as pericarditus and endocarditus. So the best thing is to take paracetamol and let the cold run its course, when you feel better then go back to the gym.

If it's just a head cold, I'd say it's OK. Anything below the neck (sore throat, bad chest, swollen lymph glands) then give it a rest so that your immune system has chance to beat the infection. Try taking zinc and vitamin C to aid recovery.

If its just a minor cold i dont see what the big deal is. If you have the flu i wouldnt. If your working out at a gym id try and do it at home, only so you dont spread your cold to others.

Your body's defences are down and it needs rest to be able to fight off the invaders.All you are doing is losing fluid by sweating and your body needs all the fluid it can get Take garlic (odourless )capsules or echinacea caps to boost your immune system and drink plenty of water 2 to 3 litres a day

I would say listen to your own body, if you feel ok in yourself you will be o.k, but if you feel rough then take a break. make sure you drink plenty of water and up you vit c. I have heard that if you do cardio work when you are not well it can put excess strain on your heart but dont quote me on that im not a doctor.
