who orders first at a restaurant, the man or the woman?

I'm not sure what Emily Post says these days, I will look.

In my personal experience, I like to let the woman order first, so that there is no pressure to conform in terms of price...and to let me figure out what kind of wine to order.

Edit: I didn't go to Emily Post after all, but I did find this fine article filled with etiquette tips. And, yes, they concur...the woman should order first.

The woman is allowed out of courtesy to order first. The man (significant other) is NEVER to order for the woman. AND call me old fashioned,but the MAN pays at all times. A proper gentleman NEVER accepts money from a woman.

Woman. waitstaff usually address the female first anyway. Men will sometimes order for the woman but that's usually agreed upon by the couple before the waiter arrives.

On most dates I've been on, I tended to ask what they were having. Then when the waitress asked if we were ready, I would give a slight pause to see if they wanted to answer and than I would give my order, and if the date was bashful I would help them order. I don't think their is an exact etiquette to it...I think it depends on your dates personality.

Actually, the woman should give her request to the man and he should give it to the waiter/waitress and then order for himself.

If your out with a real macho jerk, he'll probably order first. Be prepared for him to be like "I'll have the steak and bring a sala\d for the lady". It's retarded. If your with a respectable gentleman, he'll let you order first. The waitress usually asks the woman first.
