An islamic Prayer rug is commonly called Hamam Arabi in most of the middle east. The term was first used by nomadic tradesmen in the 1200s. Hope that helps.

I don't know, but I imagine it is a mat that you can put down on any surface to protect your clothing. It would be like your own private space.
