At first the "high" of drugs is a powerful pull. Drugs like meth stimulate the dopamine receptors in the brain which trigger the pleasure response (as do sex and chocolate!) but at something like 10 times the strength. Feeling that high, all problems go away. Unfortunately, they never really went away, and when the low invariably occurs, the person finds that not only did their problems not go away, but they just got bigger. Some drugs, again like meth, only take one hit and addiction occurs. As with any other drug, the same amount taken over time diminishes the high. This is because of the dopamine receptors again, as the drug hits the brain, more and more dopamine hits the receptors, so the body adjusts by shutting down more and more of the receptors. It takes increasing amount of the drug to get you high. Also the high diminishes in quality. By this time, however, even if you wanted to just quit you couldn't. Now the body physilogically, your body NEEDS the drug. If the body doesn't get the drug, it will show signs of withdrawal: shaking, hallucinations, etc. Now, people will start doing anything it takes to feed their habit just to keep functioning, the pleasure of the high is a thing of long ago. Now is when people will beg, borrow, steal or worse to get their drug of choice. They just don't either care or realize that their life is falling apart. Only when someone hits their bottom, can they begin to see what the drugs have done to them. Only then can they begin the long journey to rehabilitation. But even then, rehab is fraught with peril; the recidivism rate is somewhere around 80% even with intensive treatment. That's the vicious, insidious animal called addiction.

The key word is addiction. The drugs are powerful and your brain easily becomes addicted to the drug or alcohol. When you first start most people think they can stop at any time but once the addiction is there they are usually pretty powerless to stop. Quite often there are little voices that they hear and often it is the voices that win in the end. This is what happened to my late brother in law. The voices won.

~People with normal childhoods don't just go out and try drugs to "see what happens." Experimenting with drugs is an escape. Some are more likely to get addicted than others.
The people that see others die from drugs, then continue to use the same drugs are just ignorant. They only see the needs of themselves and like everyone else says, they think it'll never happen to them.~

You know what, around six years ago I use to ask the same question. Or I would say, "Look how skinny she is! I would never take anything that would make me look like that!" All it took one was a night of partying, and I was off to the races.I took one hit of crack. I guess I was curious, that was my first mistake.I was hooked. In 4 years I lost everything I had.My apartment, my furniture, and something that I loved so very, very much, my children. It sad when you put a drug before your kids, but I did.Im not gonna get into a long drawn out story, but its real easy to get addicted. All I have to say to people is never say never. Because thats excatly what I did. You will never see me look like that!Im in recovery now, I have 2yrs.so please never pick that first one up.Have a save and a Happy New Year!!!!!!

The good feeling they get, overrides what they know can happen...and think about it, people are arrogant...the thought is "that won't happen to me"...I won't get addicted or I won't behave that way...

The desire to escape their reality or to feel that exaggerated high is greater than their fear of what could happen down the road...

Some people have more addictive personalities than others also...so one person may try drugs, like them, but never become addicted...another person may try them and that sets the hook right there, they are in it 'til the end...
