I want a tattoo on my shoulder blade, with two Kanji symbols inserted into a 'tribal flame' but I'm worried about the size? I don't want my entire top corner of my back covered, but I also don't want the tattoo squeezed so small that you can't see the Kanji. Any thoughts on if this is very difficult , or if I'm just over thinking it?

when you are considering anything that is going to be permanent
such as a tattoo i do not believe that you can ever over think your decision.
you should not jeopardize the intergrity of your tattoo by making it too small or placing it somewhere that you really don't want it.
on the other hand i think placing it between your shoulder
blades would be a better fit and look or maybe you can choose another design that is smaller with less detail for your shoulder blade.

Cost wise it would depend on the time it takes to do which depends on whether there is any shading or very fine work etc Most tattoo places that I know of do not charge to get someones design ready for tattooing you just might have to wait a week or 3 depending on how busy the place is so that part should be free. Pain is an individual thing - I have 1 arm band and 1 anklet and I have one on the centre upper back for me the most painful would have been the anklet - I thought the upper back would be really painful but after the first 5 minutes I was quite comfortable and happy to sit there for the 2 hours it took (mine has a lot of fine shading in it) and yet I have had other people tell me that their tattoo in exactly the same spot made them faint (hint go with food in your stomach and take along a sugary softdrink - it will reduce the risk of feeling dizzy and or fainting) I have also had and done some body piercing (I did a course) and different people reacted differently to the same piercing - I suppose it depends on your pain threshold - have you already got any tattoos? If you do then you pretty much know what to expect if not I find the first 5 minutes a little painful and my way of getting through that is to concentrate on my breathing and try to think of only that - after that the endorphins and what ever else starts flowing and your skin seems to numb itself so that it really is quite bearable and comfortable. Hope Ive helped :) Good luck with it and your own design will always mean more to you than 1 off the wall - my first 2 are off the wall and my last was a combination of 3 designs I found online and then manipulated into one image and added a few bits of my own and that one is my favorite one.

i would be more worried about the general design and style of the tattoo. unless you are from a culture that has a history of "tribal tattoos" then i don't understand why you are getting one. or kanji for that matter unless you are japanese. it just doesn't make sense to me. you should check around and look at some of the wonderful tattoos that are being done these days and maybe go for something a little more suited to you personally. anyway.
a tattoo can be as big or as small as you want it to be. i have never really seen a tattoo that i thought was "too big" but definitely have seen many that were too small. good luck with whatever you decide.

If your not comfortable with what the size will be then I would suggest asking your tattoo artist for ways to down size the symbols, a lot of times when you make something smaller then you lose the detail. When you lose the detail it obviously doesn't look as good as it could have if you would have kept the size. Arms aren't a place for just guys, you should be proud of your tattoos, they should mean something special to you.

Ask the tattoo artist when you go to get it done. Make sure your artist is competent. If he is he should give you some good ideas.

...shoulder blade tattoos should be no bigger than the palm of your hand (if you want them to look good)...you just might have to find another spot...

It depends... if ur a guy then medium size. I think armbands r cool... but thats just me! If ur a girl i wouldnt get one myself i think the arm is a place for a guys tat not a girls. I think the biggest size for it would be like a index card, i mean dont be outrageous!!

I think that it depends on your gender. A man can usually go bigger than a woman.
