i have satelite tv and i get 5.1 from HBO but not from network stations broadcating football games in 5.1

The network stations likely only broadcast in 5.1 on their HD channels, so you'd have to have an HD satellite box with the HD locals package OR a TV antenna to pick up the over the air HD channels in order to get 5.1 from the network stations (when 5.1 programming is airing).

Stations are not required to broadcast in 5.1 Dolby Digital.
It is cheaper and easier to just broacast two-channel stereo.

"TV Guy" is right...The NATIONAL affiliates will film their shows in 5.1 and then send them out via satellite in 5.1 but your home town local affiliate doesn't have to send them to YOU in 5.1...In fact, a lot of local affiliates won't show some programs in Hi-Def even though the national feed is broadcasting in Hi-Def...What a gyp!
